Description Native to Western, Central and Southern Europe, many cultures consider the yew to be a sacred tree, representing the dualities of life and death. It was Heckate’s sacred tree of death and was said to root in the mouths of the dead. Yew is appropriate for funeral wreathes and memorial plantings and although the practice is not recommended, it was burned during spells to raise the dead as it was believed that their spirits would be trapped unless you release them. Tiny amounts were also burned for New Year‘s cleansing ceremonies & for decorating for Yule, as the winter solstice represents the cusp between the season of life and the season of death. Yew is associated with divination and astral travel and anything that relates to communication or travel between realms. The wood is also very attractive in form and coloring. This makes it especially useful for making runes, Ogham sticks, frames for scrying mirrors, talking boards and other divination tools, but it should not be used for goblets or any dishes that will be eaten from. People have died from drinking wine stored in yew barrels! THIS PLANT IS POISONOUS USE WITH CAUTION. Yew is an evolutionary link between conifers and deciduous trees. It has needles but no cones. Yew foliage is poisonous to people and livestock. The fruit flesh is harmless but the seeds are very toxic. Wildcrafted in the Canadian Pacific Northwest by the Witch.
