Very few of the twenty fairy tales included in this volume have been presented before in English; this will doubtless enhance their value in the eyes of the young folk, for whom they & principally intended. It is hoped that older readers will find some additional interest in tracing throughout the many evidence of kinship between these stories and those of more pronounced Eastern origin. Originally published in French, Fairy Tales of the Slav Peasants and Herdsmen features 20 folk tales from Slavic countries & territories. Author Aleksander Chodzko, who was a noted folklorist, poet, Iranologist & Slavist. Chodzko worked as a diplomat in Iran, & also worked for the French ministry in Paris. In 1857, he was the chair of Slavic languages & literature at the College de France, & served in this position until 1883. The stories were collected for preservation by Chodzko. Emily Harding, also known as Emily Harding Andrews, published her English translation in 1896, Harding was an illustrator for the woman’s suffrage movement, and frequent illustrator of children’s books. Fairy Tales of the Slav Peasants & Herdsmen was the first book she had published under her own name. Fist edition from 1896 ~ Mint Condition
